SCMP Interview: Emphasizing Safety in Drone Shows Through Industry Standards

In a recent interview with the South China Morning Post, Samuel Lam Hon-yuen, CEO of X Social Group, emphasized the company's commitment to safety in drone shows. He explained that local organizers adhere to strict guidelines that define acceptable thresholds for wind, rain, and GPS signal levels, ensuring informed decisions about event cancellations.

Lam highlighted the contrast between the established drone show industry in mainland China, which hosts over 9,000 events annually with standardized criteria, and Hong Kong, where the sector is still collaborating with authorities to develop similar regulations.

“Our drones rely on satellite data for signal reception,” Lam stated. “Any interruption, even with just a hundred drones in the air, can lead to instability and potential crashes.” He further warned, “They are around 300 metres [984 feet] in the air. If they fall because of the signalling issue and hit the crowd, it will become an aviation accident. So if any of the three factors do not meet the mark, we will not fly.”
